Description

OVERVIEW: The Principal Engineer position will require design and forensic experience in evaluating structures related to construction defects and building restoration consulting to support construction litigation and restoration and rehabilitation construction efforts nationwide. Projects typically involve low-to-high rise condominium structures, parking garages, multi-family dwellings, mixed-use, commercial offices, retail, educational institutions, and church buildings.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Review proposals for technical accuracy and pricing structure.
  • Attend technical association meetings and provide CEU training presentations on expert subject matters.
  • Attend and facilitate internal staff meetings and conduct principal project reviews.
  • Oversee and assist staff in conducting condition assessments to determine appropriate repair of damaged and/or poorly performing structural systems.
  • Review, oversee, and assist, if necessary, in the development of project manuals, details, specifications, and construction administrative documents for technical accuracy.
  • Attend client meetings as the principal representative .
  • Conduct periodic site observations for QC/ QA evaluations of staff overseeing restoration projects and principal representation.
  • Manage forensic / inspection staff for construction defect-related projects.
  • Develop project scope and outlines for additional forensic investigations and testing related to construction defect claims.
  • Assist and oversee the preparation of forensic reports and developer transition studies for newly constructed buildings.
  • Research the history of buildings and any associated code upgrades that should apply.
  • Work with attorneys and legal team in the preparation of construction defect claims.
  • Provide expert testimony, including depositions, mediations, arbitration, and trial testimony for construction defect claims.
  • Skill at establishing a budget and schedule, communicating with clients (internal and external), and collaborating with a team to complete projects within the budget and schedule constraints established for the project.
  • Conduct project reviews with field staff assessment, including working from ladders, lifts, scaffolds, swing-stages, mass climbers, and rooftops.
  • Ability to initiate, develop and maintain mutually beneficial client relationships.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION and CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Architecture required.
  • Professional Engineering license, P.E., required (Structural license appreciated) or Registered Architect, RA, or the ability to obtain.
  • Depending on location, additional licensure or certifications may be required.
  • 10+ years of structural/architectural design experience.
  • AutoCAD proficiency required.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation is a must.
  • Deposition or trial experience will be strongly considered.

REQUIRED SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Extensive knowledge regarding restoration of existing buildings, including concrete repair, conventional wood framing, stucco systems, glazing, roofing systems and water-proofing systems, industry restoration standards, load calculations, performance criteria, and materials selection.
  • Preparation of Project Manuals (i.e., drawings and specifications) for buildings.
  • Construction administration and management of restoration projects using CSI and AIA protocols.
  • Contract preparation and negotiation with clients and contractor-owner agreements.
  • Ability to comprehend general building systems and components, including Architectural, MEP, and FP.
  • Researching building codes (historical and current), standards, and manufacturer's data.
  • Forensic reporting or the principal review of technical forensic reports related to construction defect claims.
  • Expert testimony, including depositions, mediations, arbitration, and trial testimony for construction defect claims.
  • Excellent report writing skills with the ability to develop and commit to budgets, scopes, and deadlines.
  • Must be outgoing and able to interact with staff, clients, and contractors.
  • Excellent professional judgment and critical thinking skills required.
  • Must be able to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • You must possess excellent verbal, communication skills and technical writing abilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS, OVERTIME, and TRAVEL:

Physical Demands - Basic:

Work is performed both in an office setting and at outside locations (i.e. Client's office, industrial, construction, and/or residential sites). Employee is frequently required to stand, walk on slope roofs, sit, climb ladders, bend, work from elevated platforms (scaffolding), ride swing stages and mass climbers, climb inside attics and crawl under homes and tunnels, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and drive a motor vehicle to job sites. Employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee must be sharp, focused, and alert when conducting site inspections, speaking and interacting with clients, preparing written reports of findings, and testifying in deposition or trial. Clear vision and depth perception are also necessary.

Overtime - This position is classified as salaried with an exempt FLSA status. Regular working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one hour for lunch. There will be periods where overtime will be required, which the employee will need to comply with in order to meet the demands of the position. Travel Requirements -

Travel Requirements - This position requires up to 25% travel. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
