As a Principal Scientist you will Conduct exploratory research to produce new knowledge and potential products; conceives, organizes, promotes, and executes ideas and plans to increase chemistry's role in and contribution to the discovery and chemical approaches to meet exploratory objectives in product discovery. Develops research proposals to provide a technically and economically sound basis for developing and evaluating new or improved products, synthetic methods, processes, and analytical and physical testing techniques. Recommends utilization of the results or changes in the scope of work or termination of projects. This role is in Fort Worth, Texas and a typical day will include:

  • Serve as a Polymer Principal Scientist specializing in shape memory polymers, including gel polymers, with built-in functionalities which can be potentially interactive with external stimuli, such as light, laser, and other forms of energy.
  • Provides technical or professional advice to external and/or internal contacts.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to evaluate novel shape memory materials by prototyping into intraocular lenses (IOLs), testing, and data collection/analysis.
  • Propose hypothesis and conduct laboratory bench experiments in validating or invalidating hypothesis for further improvement.
  • Requires awareness, via self-study, of the workings of the business beyond own team, such as basic ISO IOL requirement, biocompatibility.
  • May contribute ideas and/or potential innovations which can impact the direction of the project and potentially the future portfolio of the R&D pipeline.
  • Participate ideation session, monitor patent and scientific literature and contribute to literature and patent reviews.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior team members, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence in polymer science.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in-writing, with internal stakeholders and external partners to advance project objectives and achieve business goals.
  • Assist in developing and managing an external network of research partners and collaborators to complement internal competencies.

What You'll Bring to Alcon:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs)
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English.
  • 5 Years of Relevant Experience
